It was obviously a time of oppression and a lot of struggle. Our parents endured major suffering and a lot of hard lifestyles. Imagine trying to raise kids in a period where you were not allowed to be free and choose. Imagine living in a country where you were rightfully born but not allowed or not able to conduct a simple lifestyle like going to work and back without having cops bother you about that simple routine. The irony is that going to and from work was something that was necessary and needed to be done, but being so oppressed by the laws and the situations did not make this an easy task.
We have come a long way since then, and even though things have become much easier, it does not mean that things do not need to change or get even better. We are still faced with tough issues such as unemployment. A lot of the youth graduate and then sit looking for employment. They end up qualified but never able to find a job. The most recent issue that we are all familiar with is the #FeesMustFall that the Wits students were marching about. Gladly they succeeded and they made sure that their voices were heard and that they made a difference and knew what they are fighting for. A lot of brilliant students struggle due to poor backgrounds and this leads them to not further their dreams to the ultimate. It is not cool, it is not fair...it is unjust. Where is the justice in having a brilliant mind and not being able to use it and express it to the best of your ability?
The media depicts a lot of changes that the country goes through. We feed the media. We predict what the media will show us and portray. We need not forget that we are living in a global village where the whole world is watching us as well as interacts with us...therefore we need to ensure that like a school we pull together and work together to show that as a country, we are a positive human nation. Let's ensure that we live harmoniously and with the right attitude and intensions. The president recently delivered a speech about crime and how to handle crime in our country. Let us not confuse taking a stand with being violent. Let's make things work for us.
I believe in building a better country for you...for me...for our children...our children's children...and definitely to say thank you to our parents for helping us to make a change to what the country has become and how it is progressing.
Let's make a change and never forget where we come from and where we are going.
